Techieindex Initiative to Provide On the Job Training to Persons in the Unemployed Pool. January 2013

Our Proposal is for a dedicated program for Hands on training in latest Technology in Techieindex excellence centers.

The major drag on the economy currently as it pulls free from recession has been the vast pool of unemployed persons. A great many of these are in the group that the President has described as those whose “jobs are not coming back”. A few of us in the IT industry were discussing the other day the conundrum where educated and professionally qualified persons remain on unemployment rolls for months and years while the IT industry is facing acute shortage of trained personnel.

Some of the causes to this gap may be attributed to a widespread misconception that it takes years to produce a qualified IT employee. This may be true for some critical jobs where exhaustive and lengthy period of training is needed. But there are myriad IT jobs that can be effectively handled by an educated individual with a short period of ‘On the Job Training’.

Why is there a great shortage of IT professionals at this moment? Is it just a very temporary phase to finally end in the likes of ‘dot.com’ and the recession busts ?We would propose that while booms and busts are known facets of economic cycle, the current job boom in IT is due to two main factors:

1. Exponential growth in use of digital devices, viz. Smart phones, Tablets, social media, GPS, and on the exploding volume of online trades. People now want to be connected at all times, often to several devices at a time. Companies who fail to upgrade their business model in line with the trend, are falling by the wayside.

2. Previous shortages in IT manpower were made up to a large extent by the importation of labor. This is not likely to be a solution for the future as the countries that were providing us the labor are themselves on a growth path and cannot provide talents in the numbers that we would need.  The current debate on immigration policies is also likely to have its effect. Our Proposal is for a dedicated program for Hands on training in latest in technology in Techieindex excellence centers.
