Marketing Manager , Samsung SDS
"Our Packaged Software Solutions are all aimed at making businesses run more  efficiently and be more successful."

Interview is done by V E Krishna Kumar.

1. Samsung SDS' SW engineering center i.e. CASE (Center for Advanced Software Engineering) acquired CMM Level 5, from the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) of the Carnegie-Mellon University in the United States. How are you hoping to leverage this important recognition with respect to enhancing your market presence?

The CASE Engineer Center is in Seoul, Korea. As I mentioned on the phone, we have a development and localization center here in San Jose, as well. Unfortunately the center in San Jose has not achieved the high standards for the prestigious CMM Level 5 award.

2. Established in 1996 Samsung SDS America is an exclusive Total IT Service Provider and e-Business Supporter for the Samsung Group in the American Continent. What is your core area of focus and how do you plan to create new business opportunities?

Samsung SDS America has 4 core areas. Packaged software (which we primarily talked about on Tuesday), this is our e-Solutions division e-Services, which is centered around services from our data centers. e-SI, which includes IT outsourcing and custom solutions. The strength of this is in SAP outsourced IT solutions. But, it is certainly not limited to that. E-BI which includes IT planning, dispatched engineers, etc.

3. What are your main Packaged Software aimed at business success? Who are they targeted at? What kind of solutions do they provide for the enterprise developer community?

Our Packaged Software Solutions are all aimed at making businesses run more efficiently and be more successful.

4. Other than Packaged Software what are your main business areas? Besides eGovernment, eCommerce and a manufacturing industry what are the other sectors being targeted and what are the core strengths?

In addition to manufacturing, government and eCommerce, the sectors that we are focusing on include professional and distribution/import/export.

5 Samsung SDS America was aimed at meeting the clients' business needs in the information technology sector, by offering a wide range of services and products in the area of consulting, systems integration, packaged software, IT outsourcing, and technical training. How far have you come towards meeting your mission?

Obviously, no one in the tech sector advanced as rapidly in 2002 as they had hoped. Some of our business areas such as hosting are quite flooded business areas. However, the overall diversity of
Samsung SDS America is broad enough that we can survive a soft hosting market, by being successful in other business areas such as outsourced IT staffing.

6. Over a tumultuous year 2002 Samsung SDS has struck major deals in the Middle East, China, and Japan and has entered into partnerships with leading companies Japan and China. How have these helped you in making your presence felt in the recession hit US market?

While 2002 was a tough year around the globe, economic recovery is starting to happen in small areas faster than others. Parts of Asia are rebounding ahead of the US and Japan, so this geographic diversification helps us to maintain a revenue stream, as opposed to if all of our efforts were only in the U.S.

7. Samsung SDS America had a good year despite the economic slowdown in the US markets. Where do you go from here and what strategic plans do you have for the year 2003?

In 2001 we were the 38th largest Software /IT Company in the world (according to Software Magazine). Our corporate goal is to be in the top 10, before 2010. By nurturing customer relationships and continuing to provide high-quality services and solutions that will help our customers to grow, even in tough economic times, we feel that our company will continue to grow and prosper.

8 .How has strategic alliances with some of the world's leading information technology companies such as Microsoft, Hewlett Packard, Silicon Graphics, and Computer Associates enabled in reaching out to a wider spectrum of the enterprise developer community?

We have a wide range of technologies that our software is based on, and we have a wide range of consulting/customization services that we offer to customers. The nature of these relationships requires that we have developers who are well versed in one (and usually more) of these key technologies. Samsung SDS currently employs over 1,200 SAP Certified Consultants, over 750 Microsoft Certified Professionals, over 900 Oracle Certified Professionals, as well many people with certifications from Cisco, Sun, IBM, and others.
